Senior Scientist, Microbiology

Job Description:

Scientist/Senior scientist, Microbiology will be responsible for the development and implementation of assays addressed to investigate microbial physiology and host-microbe interactions. The role will report to the Principal Scientist, Microbiology - the job title and level will correspond to prior relevant experience of the candidate.

Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to: development and implementation of in vitro, medium and high-throughput assays to characterize and quantify specific phenotypic features of microbial strains. Create detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) documentation as well as data management system for each assay system. Isolate and characterize bacterial strains from biological samples. Work closely with other Microbiome R&D team members to collaborate on experiments and facilitate data-sharing. Present results in visual, oral, and written forms to internal and external stakeholders. Candidate must maintain knowledge of both current microbiology techniques and any associated technological advancements. 

Candidate must be able to work in a team environment. Good organizational skills and maintenance of good laboratory practices is key. Ability to lead and mentor a small team is expected.


  • We are looking for applicants who have an established track record of high achievement, self-motivation, professionalism, reliability, and excellent organizational skills.
  • PhD in Microbiology or related fields
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in microbiology, with an emphasis on phenotypic characterization of anaerobic organisms in industrial set up
  • Deep knowledge of anaerobic microbial growth and physiology, host-microbe interactions as well as experience with high-throughput assay development are preferred
  • Prior supervisory/mentoring experience is required
  • Demonstrated experience in high-throughput microbial growth characterization, in vitro assay development and using liquid handling systems
  • Excellent analytical and written/verbal communication skills.Strong motivation, independence, and ability to work in a high-paced multidisciplinary environment. Strong attention to detail and record keeping are key.

Position Type: Full Time

This position is based in our San Francisco facility.  Less than 10% travel may be required.
