Senior Director, Medical Science

Position Summary:                     

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced lead to join the Medical Affairs team as the Senior Director (SD), Medical Science. In this role, the individual will have the opportunity to build, manage, and lead a field-based US team focused on KOL/External Expert engagement in support of company commitment to impacting the care of patients with serious bacterial infections. This is great opportunity to contribute to the development and execution of our company Medical Affairs strategy supporting the launch and clinical utilization of plazomicin.  The SD is a scientific resource capable of conducting high level scientific and strategic interactions with external scientific leaders as well as internal leaders.  The SD will collaborate across company to formulate plans that integrate with and support a cross-functional strategy. This position reports to the Vice President of Medical Affairs. Note, this is a home based role that can be located anywhere in the United States.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a field Medical Affairs vision and strategy in alignment with the company’s corporate strategies and objectives.
  • Conduct appropriate activities to recruit, hire and train all Medical Scientists (MSs) within US. Provide strong leadership to develop and motivate the MS team to achieve excellent results.
  • Clearly communicate the national and regional Medical Science plans, objectives, goals and metrics; define, clarify and manage the Medical Science team priorities; actively support the Medical Science team and their efforts by being their advocate and spokesperson; promote collaboration within the team, across work groups and with customers.
  • Develop a national strategy for KOL/HCP development and engagement.
  • Guide and assist the MSs in the coordination of opinion leader interactions within and across the region and with internal stakeholders as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with targeted scientific leaders to develop potential scientific and clinical therapeutic ideas related to plazomicin, including coordination/support of investigator-initiated, non-registration pre-clinical and/or clinical studies.
  • Collaborate with VP Medical Affairs and Clinical Development leads to understand, communicate, and align priorities around areas of research interest.
  • Collaborate on implementation of post approval data generation activities, including registries and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Ensure that all MS interactions and activities adhere to corporate and healthcare compliance guidance, including those related to scientific interactions with internal and external groups, responses to unsolicited requests for medical/scientific information, and discussion of external research.
  • Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in infectious diseases.
  • Serve as a scientific resource to internal functional areas. Serve as a member to cross-functional teams on ad hoc basis, as required.
  • Represent the company and Medical Affairs during exchanges with the medical and/or scientific communities relevant to products.
  • Work closely with Commercial to bring medical perspective to commercial strategies and tactics and collaborate on the most efficient and effective ways for field forces to work together.
  • Support the development of a payer strategy, as appropriate.
  • Develop and facilitate a training strategy for disease state and portfolio/pipeline products to enhance MSs and overall team knowledge.

Preferred Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in industry (e.g., biotech/pharmaceutical), preferably in Medical Affairs.
  • 5+ years of experience in anti-infectives, or related therapeutic area is strongly preferred.
  • Strong track record of building effective organizations and developing employees.

Preferred Education: 

  • PharmD, MD, PhD preferred.

  • Current working knowledge of applicable US legal, regulatory, and compliance regulations and guidelines

  • Current US work authorization required.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
